In an industry that too often overlooks the unique needs of melanin-rich skin, we felt a responsibility to create inclusive, effective, and nourishing products—formulated for us, with benefits that reach all.

Meet Our Founder: Ama

Growing up, Ama was blessed to be raised by three wise women—her Ghanaian grandmother, mother, and aunt—each with deep knowledge of African botanicals. Her grandmother always had a whipped shea butter blend on hand (she called it “Ñku”), used to moisturize, protect, and heal.

It wasn’t long before Ama realized something powerful:

“We didn’t need products marketed to us—we needed formulas made for us.”

Shea butter wasn’t just skincare. It was family, memory, and care. As her own family grew, she found herself blending products for herself, her husband, and their two children. What started in her own home quickly became something bigger.

“I made SOWANA for us—and now, I’m sharing it with you.”

Sourcing with Intention

Shea butter may be everywhere—but not all shea is created equal. We don’t believe in overuse, exploitation, or shortcuts. We believe in doing it right.

That means:

  • Working directly with women-led cooperatives in Africa

  • Tracing every ingredient to its source

  • Paying fair wages and honoring the communities behind the harvest
